     The round perforated 
disc first appeared in the 
late Neolithic, when it 
was usually smooth and 
undecorated.  Smaller 
discs could have been 
used as pendants, while 
larger ones may have been 
used as ritual objects in 
the worship of deities or 
ancestors.
